Dal 9 al 15 maggio gli spazi espositivi di VISIVA ospiteranno il progetto 50/50 selected artworks, nato dalla collaborazione tra Jessica Stewart, Rub Kandy, e trenta street-artist internazionali. In rassegna una selezione eterogenea di ultime produzioni che racconta lo stato dell'arte di un fenomeno amato e chiacchierato, sul punto di lasciarsi alle spalle il peso di vecchie questioni come la discendenza, ostentata o rinnegata, da graffiti e hip hop culture, o la lunga disputa tra "puri" di strada e "venduti" da galleria. Un'analisi fatta attraverso opere importanti, frutto di autori molto diversi, talvolta inconciliabili, connessi tra di loro, più che da manifesti estetici, da modalità di networking, scambio, supporto, autoproduzione che generano continuamente collaborazioni, turismo artistico, progetti fantastici e opere mai viste.

I Curatori: Jessica Stewart è storica dell’arte, pubblicista, fotografa. Dagli inizi del 2000 segue la scena della street-art prima romana poi internazionale. Rub Kandy si occupa di arte e comunicazione visiva. Nel 2011, a seguito della polemica per l’installazione di un’opera recante la scritta in ferro "WORK WILL MAKE YOU FREE", su un ponte pedonale di Roma, viene accusato di "Diffusione di idee naziste e razziste […]", reato nei confronti del quale si dichiara innocente. In attesa del processo prende nota degli insulti e della solidarietà che riceve. Dalla solidarietà, e in particolare da quella di molti artisti, nasce l’idea di vestirsi da curatore e pensare a una esposizione in cui riunire opere di qualità e venderle secondo la formula 50% Artista, 50% Spese legali di Rub. 50/50, appunto.

From May 9 to 15 VISIVA exhibition space will host the project 50/50 selected artworks, a collaboration between Jessica Stewart, Rub Kandy, and thirty international street artists. On show will be a diverse selection of art from this loved and talked about phenomena, leaving behind well worn discussions such as its roots from graffiti and hip hop or the longstanding argument of “pure” street work versus what’s “sold” in the gallery. Instead the exhibition takes stock of the current state of street art through the selection of a wide variety of artists, sometimes incongruous in style, yet connected through a common thread of exchange, support, and self-generated collaborations that help define this genre of art - an ethical code that brings artists together in wide-ranging projects.

The Curators: Jessica Stewart is an art historian, journalist, and photographer. Since 2009 she has been documenting the street art scene in Rome via her website RomePhotoBlog. Rub Kandy focuses on art and visual communication. In 2011, following the controversy over the installation of a work in iron bearing the inscription "WORK WILL MAKE YOU FREE" on a pedestrian bridge in Rome, he is accused of "dissemination of racist and Nazi ideas [...] " an offense in respect of which he claims innocence. While awaiting trial he began to notice both the insults and support he has received. From this support, in particular that of many artists, the idea of dressing up as an exhibition curator was born as a way to bring together quality artwork and sell them according to the formula 50% Artist, 50% legal fees for Rub. 50/50, in fact.
